Summary :
The CHROMAPAT project aims to strengthen the LAMS’s activities in the molecular-scale analysis of organic materials in cultural heritage by acquiring a high-performance liquid chromatograph with diode array and fluorescence detectors (HPLC-DAD-FLD). This instrument will support the development and optimisation of extraction and analysis methods for colourants, binders, organic additives, and other components found in a wide range of heritage artefacts (textiles, paintings, manuscripts, etc.). In complement to the spectroscopic techniques and artificial ageing chambers already available at the laboratory, chromatography will enable in- depth study of the molecular composition of artistic raw materials and its evolution over time. This approach will naturally integrate into several ongoing research projects at LAMS that focus on understanding the degradation mechanisms of heritage materials. Beyond internal initiatives, the acquisition of this equipment will contribute to broader interdisciplinary research at the intersection of heritage science and the humanities, particularly concerning questions related to the materiality of artworks.
