Summary :
The OILAKE-MS project focuses on the development of innovative analytical methodologies to better understand the aging and degradation mechanisms of oil-based paints. To achieve this, mass spectrometry, coupled with chromatography and with imaging techniques, will be implemented. On one hand, the coupling of supercritical fluid chromatography and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry will allow for the analysis of paint formulations and the study of their polymerization, isomerization, oxidation, etc., providing detailed information on their chemical composition. On the other hand, the multimodal imaging approach combining MALDI and SIMS mass spectrometry will provide access to the spatial distribution of different molecular components on solid samples. These methods will be applied to oil-based paint systems with lake pigments in order to test the developed methodology: model samples prepared in the laboratory and exposed to artificial aging, as well as paint mock-ups produced by a restorer and samples of historical paints.
