Summary :

The requested dissolved carbon analyser will enable the quantification of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the main component of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in soils, rivers, lakes, and groundwater, i.e., organic matter smaller than 0.45 µm by convention. It will also quantify the dissolved inorganic fraction of carbon in water and solutions, i.e., dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). The purchase is motivated by the need to quantify these parameters in surface water, groundwater, and soil in order to better understand : 1) the degradation of cave paintings in caves prone to vermiculation ; 2) microbial ecology and microbialite formation in continental ecosystems ; 3) the release of DOC during permafrost thawing contributing to climate change and 4) interactions between dissolved organic matter and environmental contaminants in old mining systems and their relationship to remediation. This equipment will be integrated into the PANOPLY platform, within the geochemistry cluster, and will be located at GEOPS.
