Summary :
A reference project for research and restoration in contemporary art, POM-EXIMA will be supported by the Centre Pompidou Francilien’s Center of Excellence and Innovation in Conservation and Restoration – La Fabrique de l’art. The aim is to create a cutting-edge research platform and cross-disciplinary skills in the field of research and restoration of 20th and 21st century art. One of the world’s largest collections, with more than 140,000 works covering a wide range of materials and techniques, the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne is constantly subject to accelerating technological obsolescence and structural challenges for its future conservation and the material history of the objects. The study of collections necessarily calls for an interdisciplinary approach, combining knowledge and skills that the Center of Excellence has made its primary mission to gather from the entire DIM PAMIR community, as part of a long-term initiative. The project’s governance will ensure the greatest openness and quality of the work produced, drawing extensively on the expertise of laboratories in the Paris region. Spanning on three years, the creation of a dedicated in-house analysis and imagery laboratory—representing a major turning point in the national museum context—will enable (i) hosting a large community of research and conservation professionals (researchers, curators, restorers, conservation scientists) at both the national and international levels, (ii) bringing together research in experimental sciences applied to contemporary art, (iii) developing new methodologies and analytical practices relevant to creative processes, the characterization of materials, and alteration phenomena, and (iv) providing integrated diagnostics and recommendations for intervention.
POM-EXIMA is one of the flagship projects of the DIM PAMIR.
