XAFS50.FR is an international conference dedicated to X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAFS, for X-ray Absorption Fine Structure), a technique that provides unique insight into the structural and electronic properties of mater. Developed in parallel with major advances in synchrotron radiation, XAFS has gradually established itself as an essential tool for numerous scientific communities, either from academy or industry, and is now even beginning to be implemented as a laboratory technique using commercial spectrometers. Organized at the SOLEIL Synchrotron to mark the 50th anniversary of the first French publications written by the pioneers of the field, reporting measurements collected at LURE—France’s first national synchrotron center, which operated until 2003— XAFS50.FR will bring together, over five days, approximately 150 people from the physics, chemistry, geosciences and environment, heritage, and biology communities—including both experimentalists and theorists, from early-stage users to young doctoral students. Through a dialogue between scientific heritage and future prospects, it will highlight the pioneering experiments, the development of formalisms and the standardization of analyses, as well as current advances in synchrotrons toward fourth-generation sources—a development that SOLEIL-II will soon join.
