Data and digital methods

This axis supports the study of material heritages through the development of original methods, both in mathematics and in information sciences. First, the aim is to make all data, both qualitative and quantitative intelligible, to describe the complex systems studied: transformation and representation of data sets, in particular to propose a cross-contextualization of observations combining both multimodal measurements and the study of cohorts of samples. The fields of signal/image processing, statistics and learning are mobilized.
It is also about designing models, whether conceptual, statistical or mechanistic, which are fed by open datasets by and for the members of the DIM. To this end, the network develops methods and tools for sharing the data produced, for integration, exploration, visualization, and enrichment of data sets and collections of objects studied. All of the work is enriched by the problems and practices of the thematic fields supported by the DIM, each of these constraints being a source of originality in the methods developed. Particular attention is paid to the articulation with the other methodological axes. Thus, interactions with the “Instrumental and experimental innovations” axis allow us to propose new modalities thanks to the joint development of the instrument and the exploitation of measurements. Interactions with the “Heritage practices and history of collections” axis contribute to the lifting of barriers in information science, in terms of creating common descriptive repositories, and simultaneous indexing of metadata and content with the implementation of processes in line with open science practices.
